Life, Death & A Proper Brew: Bringing Our Community Together

There is something comforting about sitting down with a brew, a biscuit, and friendly faces. At Crabtree Family Funeral Services, our heart is here in our local area. Supporting a community isn't just about being there during life’s hardest days; it’s about creating welcoming spaces to talk openly, support one another, and clear away the taboo around a topic that touches us all.

We are proud to bring "Life, Death & A Proper Brew"—our free local Death Cafe event—to Pudsey, Bramley, Farsley, Stanningley, Calverley, Rodley, and the wider community.d

What Is a Death Cafe?

A Death Cafe is a global movement with rich British roots. The UK’s first Death Cafe was founded in Hackney, East London, in September 2011 by web developer Jon Underwood and his mother, psychotherapist Sue Barsky Reid. Inspired by Swiss sociologist Bernard Crettaz, they set out to break the silence surrounding mortality. Today, thousands of gatherings have taken place across the globe, offering a simple, gentle space to eat, drink, and discuss life and death.

It isn’t a grief counselling session or a sales pitch. There are no guest speakers, agendas, or set topics. It’s a warm space to reflect on what makes life meaningful.

Who Is It For?

In short: everyone. Whether you’re joining us from Pudsey, coming over from Bramley, popping in from Farsley or Stanningley, or travelling from Calverley, Rodley, and beyond—you are warmly invited.

This space is open to:

  • Friends and Neighbours: Looking to connect and share meaningful conversations.
  • Families & Relatives: Mums, dads, grandparents, sons, daughters, aunties, uncles, and cousins wanting to navigate sensitive topics together.
  • Colleagues, New & Old: Co-workers and former teammates looking for an open, gentle environment to talk.
  • Those Who Have Lost a Loved One: Anyone carrying memories and looking for a welcoming room of listening ears.
  • The Simply Curious: Anyone who wants to break the taboo and explore life, mortality, and legacy.

The Power of Simply Listening

Sometimes, just listening makes a huge difference. You do not need to share a personal story or have answers to participate. Often, sitting quietly with a warm drink and hearing others share their reflections can bring immense comfort, clarity, and a sense that we are not alone. There is no pressure to speak—your presence as a quiet listener is just as valuable to our group.

What Sort of Questions Are Discussed?

Because there is no fixed agenda, the group guides the conversation naturally. Conversations might touch on:

  • Life & Legacy: What gives our lives meaning, and how would we like to be remembered?
  • Everyday Curiosities: Why do we find death so hard to talk about in modern society?
  • Future Wishes: How can we document our final wishes or songs to make things easier for loved ones?
  • Shared Experiences: What has living through loss taught us about living well today?

Being Here to Listen

Talking about death can feel daunting, but sitting around a table with a hot drink makes all the difference. We’re here to provide a safe, gentle, judgment-free environment. You bring your thoughts and stories—we’ll provide the listening ears, brews, and biscuits.
